Turret Peak's West Ridge

Looking up at Turret Peak's sharp West Ridge from just below Elsie Col (which is out of view to the right). The route ascends steep 3rd & 4th class rock to the right of the snow in the couloir and then climbs steep 5th class rock (up to about 5.6) to reach the ridge crest. From there its a long traverse over a couple of gandarmes to the true summit. Wind River Range, Wyoming. July 2009.

What's the difference between a buttress and
a gandarme? Is a gandarme sharper?

Do you actually work with lasers? Thanks ...

I'm no expert, but I think of a buttress as having the same kind of shape as the flared base of a tree trunk - a buttress supports something by definition. I think of a gendarme as a rock tower.

And I did work with lasers (designing laser radar systems) up until a few months ago when I got laid off :(
