Upland Larkspur (Delphinium nuttallianum)

Upland Larkspur (Delphinium nuttallianum)

Upland larkspur is a very common species in much of western U.S. and Canada. It typically grows in open dry forests, shrublands and grasslands, but some other species grow in moister habitats. There are many species of larkspur, all of which are toxic to some degree. Most are blue, but white, yellowish, pink and orange flowers occur. Symptoms of poisoning include general weakness and eventually respiratory paralysis. Abdominal pain and nausea are also commonly experienced. Young plants and seeds contain the highest amounts of toxins. This plant can be a problem for livestock especially in agricultural area. Photo is from the Owyhee Plateau of Idaho. May 2004
