Re: curiosityThanks. There were actually two of these birds around that morning. They both kept taking the crackers that we offered them. They would just take the cracker and fly off, them come back and take another one. I think they they were making a food cache in a tree somewhere. The birds are called pine jays (or gray jays), and they have been given the nickname of "camp robber jay". They will take off with any food that they can manage to steal, so you do have to be careful. I usually do purposely feed them, however.
Last winter while I was skiing at Aspen, Colorado (actually very close geographically to where I took this photo) I feed the pine jays there, outside of the restaurant which is on top of the mountain, pieces of my Cliff Bars. I think that those birds were actually eating what I gave them more or less on the spot. I showed some skiers who were from Germany or Austria how you could just feed the jays out of your hand and then take a picture of them at the same time. They got a kick out of it!

Re: That's myTina, I hate to break it to you, but that's a wheat thin ;-) But, if you move to Colorado, and after I move to Colorado in a few years, if we go climbing together I will be sure to bring a box of triscuits.

The colors, the contrast and the sharpness on the biscuit and the bird's head. Brilliant !

Yes, I held the biscuit in my left hand while I took the photo with my right. It was a tricky photo to take because I had to focus the camera on my extended hand, that way the bird would be in focus. After I set everything up, I held out the biscuit and the bird came and grabbed it. I tried to take this same shot with a newer digital camera, but none of those photos turned out very well. I needed the control of my old Nikon FG to pull this shot off.
