Variation to the

Variation to the "J" Tree Pitch

If the crack (of Uneventful) above the "J" Tree is not to your liking, you can move left and into the next gully and follow it to the top. Here Pen is leading the 5.6/5.7 friction traverse from the "J" Tree ledge into the North Buttress gully. Make sure you locate the impropable ORANGE rock and traverse over it, if you miss it and go higher up, (many do) ,the climbing will be much harder (5.9). November 24, 2008 photo.

traverse

If you find the right place, you can also traverse left about 90 feet higher where the difficulty is no worse, about 5.6. But it's not as good climbing as the regular face traverse.

Re Traverse

Yes, good point. If one can find the higher traverse, it is easier than the Orange Rock I took the picture of. But over the years, I witnessed couple epics, 5.6 leaders in 5.9 terrain a bit right off the upper traverse and off route...Just FYI.
