Variation to the standard 4th...

Variation to the standard 4th class E Chute route up Basin Mountain (approximate). This variation involves more devious routefinding, frequently goes over questionable rock, & is longer (route starts at approximately 12,420'), slightly more sustained & difficult (at 5.2) than the standard route. Steep, great views, & a good amount of exposure throughout. After the climbing portion of this, you pop up directly beneath one of the false summits, ~100' of 3rd class from the true summit. 16 July, 2005

This does not look like a regular route. Dirk, it looks like you started on the rock much earlier than the standard route. it may be one of the flavors of the route that Galen Rowell mentioned in the register or something else (unclimbed?).

I wouldn't be surprised if no-one had been up this particular way before. Definitely some loose/crappy rock in places (luckily not the cruxes) & more circuitous routefinding. It probably had another 300' or so of rock than the standard route. Glad I did it in retrospect (I did the standard one, too- just downclimbing!).
