Vertical Dikes

In this picture you can see 4 separate vertical dikes cutting through the horizontal layers of basalt on the east face of Steens Mountain. Much like the vertical dikes seen in the wallowas, these are evidence of fissures in the Earth's crust where Basaltic Magma flowed to the surface eventually accumulating as surface lava that stretched for miles away from the fissures. Devine Rock is the large feature seen at the lower end of the ridge.
