View of Shastina taken from Mt. Shasta west of Whitney Glacier. We traversed the west side of Mt. Shasta with crampons and ice axes beginning the climb from where most SW ascents begin. We three then spent the night in a small tent in the saddle between Mt. Shasta and Shastina. The wind was fierce. The next day we ascended Mt. Shasta west of Whitney Glacier, but because of illness, had to descend from about 13,000 ft., terminating the climb The next summer (1972) we ascended Mt. Shasta from the SW via the Red Banks and reached the summit.
