Why pointed?

The Dutch navigator Willem Barentsz gave Spitsbergen its name when he discovered it in 1596. The name Spitsbergen, meaning "pointed mountains".

Location

 

How to get there?

1. Travel to Norway (Oslo or Tromso)

2a) Regular flights -2 times a week - Oslo/Tromso - Longyearbyen (SAS Airlines) or

2b) cruise ship/yacht - depends on the sea conditions - 5  days from Tromso or 7-8 days from Oslo

3. Longyearbyen- main city on the island. Hotels/ Restaurants/ camping/ shops and gun sellery. Guide / travel agencies

 Longyearbyen- Hornsund -

a) by yacht/ speedboat - 12-36 hours. March - October.

b) by snowmobile - 1-2 days. February- April. Only in the spring and ONLY with a guide. See Below.

c) on skis - 10+ days, March - April. Depends on ice/ glacier conditions and snow cover. Only of experienced with a guide.

d) by dog sled - many days, only for Experts. February- April.



e) Directly from main land (Tromso) by cruise/yacht. Tour around the island, polar bears, glaciers and more. 2 or 3 weeks.
