Approach
Take a bus from Arequipa to little town Cotahuasi placed on the bottom of Canon de Cotahuasi - the deepest canyon inthe world. You might have to change buses in the village of Chuquibamba (about 5 hours from arequipa). Ask the driver to drop you off near the Lago Pallacocha. This is at 4700m. and as the busses only go during the night, it will drop you off at about 1am so set up your tent and contnue in the morning. . From the dirtroad, head eastwards passt the southern shore of the lake and walk arround the morrain round oits left side. You will get onto a morrain plateau with a small rocky section in the middle. tak the right hand side of the rocky ridge and you will get beneath a rocky gully, where you can set your tent up in the volcanic ashes. There is a little stream valley where you can find some water during the day more to the south...
Route Description
head up the gully and get onto a rocky ridge that will lead you up to the beginning of the glacier plateau. From here, climb in the south west direction to get to the summit. the summit is quite flat and roundish and vast. the last section lowers in inclination more and more and is a never ending story:-) get back the same way. The busses back to Chuquibamba and Arequipa pass the lake by at arround 7pm by the lake. There are only 2 busses per night and they are very crowded on Friday nights with many people moving to the cities for the weekend.
Essential Gear
Glacier climbing gear is essential. based on the time of the year, you may encounter many crevasses. 1 snow axe per person is sufficient
