Frenchmans Canyon

Route Description

The ranch house is located at about 4,840'. Assuming you're starting from the ranch house, and you've received permission from the ranch owner, start walking up the dirt road. The road initially heads east up Frenchmans Canyon, and was recently bulldozed when we were there. You'll pass through an unlocked gate a short ways up the canyon. Continue up the canyon on the road for about two miles or so. The road climbs gradually through this stretch. At some point, the road leaves the canyon and turns right, and you'll begin your climb towards Eagle Peak. You will soon notice the big white radar dome atop Eagle Peak. Continue climbing up the ever-steepening road, where you will soon arrive at the base of a steep slope. The road really begins to steepen here, and it starts switchbacking up the mountain. Once you reach the range crest, the grade moderates somewhat, and you'll turn left and start heading up the ridge towards Eagle Peak. After a short distance, you'll discover that you have to drop down about 200' or so to reach a saddle just below the big radar dome. Descend to the saddle, then start climbing back up the road to the radar site, where the dirt road ends. The paved road, which comes in from the other side of the mountain, also ends here. Even though we never saw any No Trespassing signs anywhere along the road, do not enter the radar site. Instead, turn left and make the final push to the summit only a short distance away, where you can enjoy the wide-open vistas of west Texas.

Elevation Gain: About 3,000'.
