Driving Directions
To reach the trailhead, drive Interstate 84 to North Powder exit 285. Head west on county road 101, and follow the signs for Anthony Lake. After 3.5 miles, turn left at a 4-way intersection, and 0.6 miles after this, turn right onto the Anthony Lakes Highway, a part of the Elkhorn Scenic Byway. This turns into Forest Road 73. Continue about 20 miles to the Anthony Lakes Campground on the left. Once in the campground take a right after 100 yards following signs for day-use parking. Follow the road around the west shore of the lake to a parking lot at its end.
Approach
From the parking lot, follow the shoreline trail 0.2 miles to the signed Hoffer Lakes Trail #1641 trailhead. Take a right onto this trail, and follow it half a mile until you reach Hoffer Lakes. Then turn left (east) and follow the unofficial trail to a Rock outcropping on the east shore of the Lake. This is the base of Gunsight’s west ridge.
Route Description
Head in an east/northeast direction, and scramble up the ridge through conifers and rock outcrops to the western summit. The final portion is steep, but there are many handholds, and the granitic rocks provide good friction. From here, it is an easy and straightforward scramble over to the eastern summit. If you do not want to descend the way you came, you can take the southeast ridge down and follow game trails back into Angell basin and back to Hoffer Lakes.
