Approach

see the main page for the approach.

Note: this is an easy walk-up in summer, really a short hike of 600 meters of slope, but in winter it's a north face and the ice is very frequent, in this season it's not a hike, is a basic snow climb only for mountaineers with winter equipment.

Route Description

Time: 2h30min (winter). 1h 30min (witout snow).

The route is not evident from the ski resort of Valdezcaray. The short direct itinerary across the north face it's not a good idea in winter, and even in summer is a hard slope not advisable. The itinerary go across the Col Artaza of west (left from ski resort)

From the ski resort (1550m) we reach near of the ski-lift the big house of ski-resort surrounded with a lot of skiers in winter. You must be a little carefull with this skiers in the first snow track to reach it. In this point we leave the ski resort to west side (behind the house to left side) and across a wide track with important slope we arrive to a little palin over the ski resort. The hillside is a easy hike in summer time but in winter this is a wide snow ramp without sunlight (hard in the morning, crampons neccesary). Across the hillside we arrive near to the Col Ormazal (1887m) with the mount La Cuña (2012m) in north side (left) and Cabeza Parda (2118m) in south (right). We turn to south to get the snow track taht descent from the ski lift of col under San Lorenzo. This is the best option (the climb of north face of Cabeza Parda it's not a good idea with ice). Out of ski season it's a easy track but you must walk in the border in winter for the skiers (a little uncomfortable) to reach the Col Artaza (2031m). In the end of track we're under the last ramp to reach the summit, generally with hard wind in many days (2271m).
Descent for the same route.

Complementary climbs: Cabeza Parda (2218m) from col Artaza in 15 minutes. La Cuña (2012m) from Col Ormazal in 20 minutes.

Alternative: some people get some wide coulouirs of north face but the use of two ice-axe and crampons can be neccessary in slope of 50º with ice. The descent it's not advisable.

Essential Gear

Nothing special in summer, springtime or autumn.
In winter: crampons/ice-axe, ski or snowfood... it's a north face.
