Lopo Peak

The trail begins at a lookout at the top of Serra da Mantiqueira traversing a beautiful trail through the woods and already spotting the peak after half an hour only. Soon you will reach Pedra das Flores, where you can rest and enjoy the scenery of a typical organization of mining companies landscapes, and a great view to a endless sea of hills. After passing Pedra das Flores, walk the ridge for another half an hour to the summit pyramid base.

There it starts the scrambling that will lead you to the summit of Pico do Lopo. There the vision is of 360 degrees and the scenery of course, breathtaking, overlooking the dam of Joanópolis and in clear days, one can see the shape of the mountains in Monte Verde.

Getting There

From São Paulo, a bus is gonna take about 1.3 hours to get to the city, is it close to São Paulo capital. Once you get to the city, you have two options:

1st: Walk up the Embratel Road to the starting point (I did that, it is endless that walk and you’re gonna get too tired. Around 9km up, altitude difference around 600m.
2nd: Pay a taxi to take you up there: Ask for the Embratel antennas. There, continue by the road till you reach a wall and a gate. At your left is the beginning of the trail.

Keep at the trail at all time, after 20 minutes you’re gonna see the peak for the first time from inside the woods, pass by the Cabritos Rock (1.611 m) and Flowers Rock (1.650m). After that 15 or 20 minutes more and you’re gonna be scrambling your way to the top. Very windy but possible to set up camp for just one tent (2 people).

At night is normal to hear sounds of animals walking around, and there’s reports of spoted Onças, be careful.
