Route Description
From the Barrea center continue towards the main road SS83 to Alfedena and stop at Km 67 near a bend to the left. Parked the car near a small building used for the aqueduct (Sorgente Sambuco, 1141 m), continue on foot for a dirt road (path K6) Looking to the right you can admire a splendid view and Barrea and the lake, walking between hawthorn, brambles, oaks and maples. After about 1 km you reach the Sorgente delle donne Here the trail K5 starts and with orange signs going north enters the picturesque Vallone dell’inferno for a large part of the trail along the dry bed of an old stream now dry
The path climbs gradually into the thick and shady woods , where the vegetation is composed purely by maple and beech trees especially beautiful and amazing some of considerable size. Vallone dell'Infrno is close to the east from the western slopes of Mount Serrone, visible from some small sections where the wood is slightly thinner, and west from Mount Iannazzone (1738 meters). Now you can walk over soft carpet of moss
The last parts of slope are definitely the most challenging and with 3-4 zig-zag reaches the Madonna delle Grazie, where 2 September 1940 was placed on a rock embedded picture of Our Lady called the Madonna of the good path, to protect travelers
Soon we reach the highest point of the trail (1656 m) and then we go down to the beautiful valley in which nestles the beautiful Logo Vivo at 1591 meters. Front is, like painting, a majestic sight, starting from west to east, M. Iamiccio (2074 meters), M. Petroso (2249 m) the highest mountain of the park, M. Altare (2147 m) and M. Tataro (2191 m) summit ridge that connects Monte Petroso with Metuccia and Meta (2242 meters).
The name "Lago Vivo" (Live Lake) comes from the fact that the lake is constantly changing in size according to season (highest in May with the snowmelt, minimum in October) and in autumn its banks are frequently populated by deer that face during the mating season
The shape of the downstream part of the great cirques, which characterize all the "Cordillera" Petroso, Altare, Meta and Metuccia, and some elements still present in the landscape indicate an ice origin of the basin , then re-edit by an intense phenomenon of
carsismo
At the south edge of the valley of Lago Vivo is the source “Fonte degli uccelli” which guarantees good and fresh water all the year.
