We had a plan A and a plan B. This was plan B but ended up being just perfect for the day. I have wanted to do this for 2 years.
So I arrive and Splattski’s to pick him up around the “Gentleman’s” start of 8:00AM... Just getting out is always a bonus, getting out with one of my favorite hiking partners is priceless.
We set off from the Three Point Mountain Ridge heading to Kepros. The trail was firm and we had very little snow to negotiate. Voo Doo Child was looking for deer and we were both diligent about looking for the hunters.
Ridge Walk, Summit and Spicy Hummus
We hit the summit in real good time, we then sat down to a lunch of Big Dan’s Spicy Hummus that I had constructed the night before, paired with Lemon Pepper Boneless Herring.
Kepros is one of those peaks that Tom Lopez (Idaho a Climbing Guide) has deemed one of the “Grand Slam” peaks. In the Boise area we have 4 mountains that make up the Grand Slam. They are Kepros, Cervidae (Peak 4987), Lucky Peak (Shaw Mountain) and Mt Heinen.
It is my understanding that the Grand Slam must be done in a 24 hour period. It has not been done yet as it will take a tremendous physical and mental effort to complete... Lucky Peak is an 11 mile march, Mt Henien is a 10 mile death march, Cervidae is 5.5 mile round tripper and Kepros is a 10 stiff hike. The cumulative elevation gain is around 10,000 feet.
So I am dreaming about getting in good enough shape to accomplish this feat. The up and downs are fun, on the way out that ground that was firm is now turning to mud and our return route is part of the loop that Splattski does and I want the “total experience. On the way back the snow is also more abundant.
So Johnny Mountain tells me we made good time right at 5 hours after a longish lunch just below the summit
