Two big ones
From June to August 2011, I spent quite some time in the Cordillera Blanca. Now, I wouldn't say I'm a highpointer, but I can't help but read about, and then look at the highest peaks around whenever I'm in a particular mountain range. And, as one thing leads to another, after looking at a mountain, often I want to climb it.
In the Cordillera Blanca, the two highest are Huascarán Sur (6746m) and Huascarán Norte (6655m). They can be climbed from the same high camp, just below the col that separates them. The col is 6010m, but it's very exposed and windy, so it's better to camp a bit lower. Almost all climbers on Huascarán only aim to climb Sur, but I figured, why not try to climb both? If the conditions are good, that should take just one additional day!
As it turned out, on the first attempt, I only climbed Norte. I had to come back for Sur. Consequently, it wasn't just one more additional day, more like one additional week. But, on the up side, I got to see and enjoy it twice as long.
Here is a collection of photos from the two peaks; some from these two intimate encounters, others from the trails and mountains further afield. Have fun!
