First Attempts on Mount Wire

I was on a business trip in Salt Lake City from Sunday 11/7/10 through Thursday 11/11/10. On Sunday driving to the hotel is when I found out I was staying at the base of Mt. Wire. I decided that I would go for a run in the mountains in the morning before having to leave for work.

Monday morning I was not expecting to make it to the top of Mount Wire, I just wanted to scout out the area, in the dark. I was just running towards Mount Wire and ending up running 2.5 miles starting at 4500 feet and ending at 5800 feet.

Tuesday morning I was planning to try and make it to the top of Mount Wire just by heading that direction. The problem is that there was a VERY dense fog. After two miles I decided it was time to head back. The problem is I was turned around and "heading back" was taking me directly away from my hotel. Luckily, I decided to check my Forerunner to make sure I was heading the right direction .3 miles later. From the picture below you can see how well I can run a straight line up a mountain in the dark and fog.

Got So Close!

Wednesday morning was clear so I decided to give it another try. Once again I just headed towards the right direction at first and then followed a trail that was heading that general direction. Eventually I ran out of trail going the right direction and found myself getting into some thicker brush. I eventually made it to the top, but it was not the top of Mount Wire. I was on that ridge but on another small peak and I did not have time to make it to Mount Wire without making myself late for work. So close!

Finally Got to the Peak

Thursday morning I was prepared and determined. I made a course file using Bike Route Toaster and sent it to my forerunner. I followed the course which kept me on the trail up to Mount Wire. From the hotel to the peak and back it was 4.5 miles and took 1 hour 16 minutes. As with every other morning it was dark so all I could see were the lights of Salt Lake City. The picture did not turn out from my phone so an elevation map is all I have to share. I decided not to climb the tower in the dark.

Thanks

Thanks for posting this. It gave us the confidence to head up last night in the dark. There was decent moonlight so we did the whole thing without using flashlights or headlamps and had a great time...all 4 of us even climbed up to the top of the tower.
