Dušan Jurkovič

Dušan Jurkovič (1868 - 1947) was a Slovak architect with a strong taste for Carpathian mountain folk architecture, and Art Nouveau (JugendArt), two quite incompatible disciplines and styles at first sight, but which he succeeded to marry together quite well.

His most famous achievement is undoubtedly the Pustevny chalets in the Czech Beskids, but we can mention also the Jiráskova Chata hut in Dobrošov (Czech Sudetes), as well as few other minors objects like the wooden gateway of the castle of Město nad Metují (Czech), and the cemetery of Przełęcz Małastowska (Poland, Beskid Niski). If you find any other pin it here !

All of his realizations are a vivid and colorful mix of items commonly seen in vernacular wooden architecture, and audacious shapes and curves reflecting the style of this period, with an extravagant abundance of fantasy that somehow reminds a bit Barcelona's Sagrada Família, or Hundertwasser's house in Vienna.

This album is dedicated to Dušan Jurkovič, this great mountain enthusiastic architect !

Re: you make me homesick...

Well at this occasion we had a good lunch at... Jiráskova Chata. A bit less colorful than the Pustevny huts but not less fantaisist. Not far from the sandstones where you sometimes climb, you should give it a visit !

Parents

Parents refers to a larger category under which an object falls. For example, theAconcagua mountain page has the 'Aconcagua Group' and the 'Seven Summits' asparents and is a parent itself to many routes, photos, and Trip Reports.
