There are two major campgrounds on the outskirts of Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada Range. The first one is Lone Pine Campground. Although this campground offers the best view of Mount Whitney it has a very limited campsite capacity, and is often prone to being full. The much larger campground in the area is Tuttle Creek Campground, elevation 4944 feet. This campground offers 81 sites along three different loops running parallel to Tuttle Creek. The two upper loops, sites from #1 to #60, run westward toward the mountains and offer campsites on both sides of the creek and walk-in campsites. On the lower loop, #61 to #81, you will find the horse corrals and group campsites. Regardless of which loop you are on, the campsites are large with a healthy distance from the neighboring sites and not very far from the restrooms.

Since there are no large boulders or hillsides to block your view, Tuttle Creek Campground offers some of the best views you get in the Eastern Sierras. You get a great uninterrupted view of Owens Valley and the Inyo Mountains to the east. Looking in the direction of the west, you will get a great view of Lone Pine Peak. To the left of Lone Pine Peak, you will get a great view of the intriguing Comb Ridge that includes Mount Le Conte, and Mount Corcoran. Further north, you will get a view of Mount Russell and Mount Williamson.

With a large number of spacious campsites and only 5$ per night fee, Tuttle Creek Campground is ideal for RVs and folks with limited budget. There are also long term permits, 100$/month or 300$/season, available at the Interagency Center in Lone Pine, or at White Mountain Ranger Station in Bishop about 50 miles north on Highway 395.

Driving Directions

From the town of Lone Pine along HWY 395 in California drive about three miles on Whitney Portal Road to intersect with Horseshoe Meadow Road. Turn left onto Horseshoe Meadow Road and drive 1.6 miles to Tuttle Creek campground sign on your right. Turn right and drive another mile up this road to the campground itself.
