Virgin Forest above Laurel Falls
To the best of my knowledge, the most accessible patch of virgin (old-growth) forest in the Smokies is above Laurel Falls.
To get there, follow the crowds to Laurel Falls. Enjoy the spot. Then abandon the crowds by going another half-mile up the trail. It's no longer paved, it's a little steeper, and it opens up into a stretch of tall trees.
No leaves on this one yet, though it was starting to bud. April 2010.
