Watauga Reserve Eastern Box Turtle

Watauga Reserve Eastern Box Turtle

An Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene Carolina, makes eye contact as he hurries across the Appalachian forest floor. Notice the red eye--it means he's a male. This guy's shell was about 8-9 inches long. Watauga Reserve, Cherokee National Forest, Upper Unakas, Western Blue Ridge, Tennessee, USA May 2010.

Beauty ..

Glad to see these critters thriving in the
Cherokee NF.

We have mud turtles and painted turtles out
Arizona way. I'm still trying to get a
photograph of one.

Excellent shot!

Re: wow

Thanks. It's really a beautiful and diverse area. Not a lot of rock climbing, but some good steep slopes and plenty of wilderness.
