I'll second thatGreat photo. Could you breifly explain the ice-climbing difficulty scale? Do they break up waterfall ice as a different system?

Re: I'll second thatThanks Dan, ice climbing has its own rating system. Here is a brief explanation.
WI – Waterfall Ice
AI – Alpine Ice
M – Mixed
The ratings are determined by how steep the route is and how difficult it is to place protection. So a WI1 route would be around 30°. A route rated WI5 would be an 85-90° ice climb.
After the technical rating is the estimated time such as a II, meaning the route would take half a day to climb for the average person.

Re: I'll second thatSounds pretty similar to rock climbing, (what I am used to) with an extra steepness component added. Thanks for the quick clarification. I definately need to try this some time. It can get frustrating trying to find warm and dry crags this time of the year.

So coolIt's amazing how the ice forms like that all over the rocks...so beautiful. Great photo!

Re: So coolThanks! The ice on this formation is unusual and doesn’t always form well. It was very snowy and cold so conditions were good.

Looks goodLooks like a fun place to be! Did you get to climb this?

Re: Looks goodThanks Josh. No, I haven't climbed this. The area was crowded with climbers at the time. I've only seen this ice form once when it was really cold.

Re: Cool Picture! Thanks! It was rare to see thick ice form in this area of the canyon. I also like your profile photo on the summit of Teewinot!
