Was short on time and didn't believe the the western dome could be that much easier, so I tried the eastern but bailed at the crux. Will hopefully return one day for another shot at West Dome, in better light and without the 50-mph gusts.
I'll be back for the shorter west dome.
Easily made it up the west summit after a quick scramble, but couldn't get a solid enough foothold on the headwall on the east. Probably could have done the chimney but wasn't interested in doing it alone, so I bailed.
Dennis Goldsmith and I climbed the east dome by the chimney/chute route (see description on Mountain page) to a wondrous view. My attempt to downclimb the 8 foot wall instead of the chute was a bounce and roll fall, fortunately only scrapes and bumps. The west dome was more within my abilities, amd it was also outstanding. Just to make the drive through Valley of Fire is worth doing. Thanks for spurring me to go here.
I climbed the east dome. I chose to go up the little chimney(discussed in the route description), as I felt it was the safest way to get to the top. Nice view!
Have done both the east and west White Domes.
