Climbed this as a part of a backpacking loop with some teens from my youth group. As weather often does, it dramatically shifted from spring to wind and sleet and then to a winter snow storm. We ended up bunkered down in our tents under snow and 15 degree temperatures. Woke up to a beautiful frozen mountain. The skies were clear and you could see for miles. It was cold but so worth it.

The Controversy Continues...
After summiting Mount Rogers, I spent a lot of time exploring other trails in the area. Amongst the areas explored was Wilburn Ridge and the next closest ridgeline. Some maps show "Pine Mountain" as the top of Wilburn Ridge, while other maps do not. I found some rangers and even they began disputing the information between each other. Even several other hikers joined the conversation and gave differing opinions. Regardless of the true highpoint and its name, the area is very scenic and fun to explore.

Route Climbed: Rhododendron Trail in Massie Gap to AT. Date Climbed: 1986-2004
I've been climbing this peak since 1986. I try to make it up there at least once a year. It's the prettiest trail I've walked in Virgnia. One of the best in the South. Few others that I've hiked can compare to it, and I've logged thousands of miles.
