They were looking for food. I think they are habituated to people. When John held out his hand, as if to feed them, they noticed...

Ha, ha !

This brings back the time I worked at Grand Canyon! They have a pen or corral with these
guys inside it. People walk up to them and pass food over the fence. On the fence, a sign clearly states, "Please don't feed us - we have a temper and can bite you!!!
