Wildlife in the mountains - wild turkey jake

Wild Turkey males are referred to as ‘toms’ or ‘gobblers’. If they are young, as is the one pictured here they may also be called ‘jakes’. This young jake was still with a flock of hens being herded by the mature tom noted in my previous image. An interesting point of note: a turkey's head can change color. From white, to blue, to full red. Red headed birds typically mean that the bird is in a fighting mood. Blue and white will mean they are ready to breed.
