(Windblown) gold of the Earth

Good eyes!!! The Brittlebush has yellow flowers on it that resemble daisies. The seeds of Brittlebush are blown away by the wind. The seeds can be dormant for
YEARS if conditions are dry or harsh.

Does anybody remember that old gem of a movie, "Please
Don't Eat the Daisies"
starring Doris Day?
Well, I just had to eat my hat, because I thought this
was the Desert Sunflower. If Brittlebush are blooming
this EARLY in the vicinity of Lake Mead, then you can BET it was a wet winter in the Mojave Desert.

I took this photo inside Lovell Canyon, and near the 48,019-acre Muddy Mountains Wilderness Area in Southern Navada. (March 31, 2008)

I am jealous

I love the NW but am getting a bit tired of looking at wildflowers in April elsewhere. I love seeing the wildflowers, I'm just jealous! Cheers. Trina

Re: I am jealous

Yes, it's okay to be jealous. That's what
keeps the blood flowing. Do you have a lot
of water flowing up there in Washington?
I always liked to pick blackberries along
the Puyallup River, but that's not 'till
August. Both of my parents were born in
Washington state. After completing their
move to Utah, think they missed the wild berries most of all. Patience. Cheers to you! -Larry

Great photo, but wrong info

Great shot Larry, but these are perennial shrubs called Brittlebush. Desert Sunflowers are much smaller and often just single-stemmed annuals. Even though some can be branched, they never look like shrubs. There are also some differences in the looks of the flowers of both plants.

Re: Great flower...

Thank you, Marija! Once in awhile, I will
run into something green or yellow growing
in the desert. When this happens, I will be
sure to let you know. :))) - Larry

Fauna can make it anywhere. ;-)

Re: Hardy

You're right, Claire! Not sure if "amorphous flora or fauna" could make it anywhere, though!

"If you make it there, you can make it anywhere! It's up to you, New York, New York!"

Take care. :)
