Color balance

Is it possible your camera was set for shooting indoors by incandescent light? I've seen enough of your desert pages to know you don't need photography lessons, but the poor color you mentioned looks like a consistent bluish cast, as if the camera was trying to compensate for yellowish indoor light.
I downloaded your Hackberry Canyon shot and opened it in The Gimp. I selected the Color Balance tool, which gives three sliders, centered on 0, on scales from -100 to +100. Dragging the Blue/Yellow slider 30 points toward Yellow brought out the color of the rock without hurting that perfect desert sky. Still not not perfect, but closer to what you describe in the text.
