Probably scared for their lives"Do the tourist masses really have as little imagination and soul as I think they do?"
Nah, they were probably just scared for their lives.

scaredYou're right; they probably were. The bits of ash floating down here and there probably made them think the Apocalypse was upon them.

Awesome shot!Kind of scary too. I just returned from the Absaroka Range. We had to leave early because all the smoke was making it hard to breath. Hiking up, it was clear but hiking down, you couldn't see more than a couple miles.

Re: Awesome shot!Thank you! I can relate to your story, too- I had a similar experience in Glacier in 2003 (have some photos and a trip report if you're interested), and I know how it's nice and blue up high while you cough below.

Re: Edge of the world!Thank you! I like your title better than mine. Maybe I'll change it.

two great shots!I like both shots a lot, but I think I like this one better -- give it an 11! The portrait layout adds to the drama of the cloud.

Re: two great shots!Thanks-- it was an awesome sight. I still can't decide which one I like better. I like the composition of this one better, but I like the colors in the other one more.

Two great shots!I agree, both pics are great, Think I'd running with the rest of the tourists!

Re: Two great shots!Thanks-- no need to have run, though; the fire was many miles away, separated by the lake. All that told you it was real, aside from that plume, was falling ash.

Beautiful and scaryThis is a sight I hope to never see in my home town of South Lake Tahoe. But I feel it's inevitable with our current crowded and under-burned forests.

Re: Beautiful and scaryYou're probably right, but I hope you're wrong. It's the same way all over the country, even here in the East, where Georgia and Florida have gotten it bad in the last few years.

do the tourist masses really have as little imagination and soul as I think they do?There is that. One of the things that bugs me about National Parks, people seem to follow only routes , car, bus, foot or whatever is programmed for them. If it's not in the guide brochure, it doesn't exist. Rangers, docents and guides with shrill voices, or the casette equivalent, in art museums too, or even in Japanese Gardens, their little herds of docile babbling sheep following them.
End of rant.

Re: do the tourist masses really have as little imagination and soul as I think they do?You mean there's more to Yellowstone than stopping at every roadside geyser basin and creating traffic jams anytime something with hooves or paws is sighted? The horror!

Yep !Do what I do ... don't even go to Yellowstone.
Find a lonely ant's hill in the desert, AND make a mountain out of it. Take some photos ... create a few trip reports. Learn the ant's language. Let Nature take it's own course. You'll be so GLAD that you did!

Re: Yep !I love Yellowstone too much not to go. But it's not too bad-- just leave your car and walk for about 10 minutes! I hear you about the desert, though-- amazing country, and very rewarding.
