A great report and a lesson in trip management that many should take to heart. You never panicked, stayed calm and patient and kept well within your capabilities. Kudos indeed! I'll have a tantrum if this isn't on the next front page.
"People coming towards us were obviously more important than us as they made it plain we should be waiting off to one side for them to take precedence" - those descending always have precedence. Undoubtedly French :)
Thanks very much! I don't want to come across as anti French though! In fact, they appeared to be German! Not that that matters, they were just people rather than a nationality!!

Sounds like a great trip, congratulations both on the summit and on keeping a cool head through what must have felt like an epic in formation!
Thanks also for the detailed TR, it will no doubt be helpful for the next generation on the lion's ridge (maybe myself next summer), especially if combined with sergio's recent TR.
A night out in good weather makes a great memory. I like how you recognized one particular danger spot (frozen snow) and moved with alacrity to protect it rather than just muddling through. That seems exactly like the kind of place and situation where accidents happen.
On that mountain everybody is trying to give you a head trip, ignore 'em!
Great trip report and photos. Something a bit different from the usual Hornligrat descriptions. (Not to denigrate them, of course). Fog pipes! Love it.
Thanks Dan. There has been some rock fall on the route which has compromised the Carel Hut, but I guess the Mountain will be there for quite some time yet!!

Thanks for posting a detailed account of your ascent, hoping to do the Matterhorn in 2010, not exactly sure by which route though ! A very good read and some stunning photos as well,
thanks,

Re: Well done. Thanks! The fog pipes are actually paid for by a heavy tax on beer in the region. I can't think of why else it was so bloody expensive!
