A minor peak in the Badlands...
A minor peak in the Badlands of Death Valley showing deposited volcanic ash (black). The ash acts as a cap to the soft clay deposits underneath and keeps the soil from eroding. See the Manly Beacon page for the geological history of the Badlands. 12-28-03
