Velebit (Veliko Rujno plateau) trip in May 2006
In this album you can see my cousin Anðelko Jakoliš (we have identical fore- and surnames, therefore I call him AJ II further on) and myself hiking the coastal mountains of the Velebit range in Croatia. The intention of that trip was the same as in October 2005 when we did our first trip together in
Paklenica NP. On the one hand I wanted to show him new beautiful places of his country which I described to him in stories of my earlier solo trips. On the other hand I wanted to spend a few days away from everyday routine and fast-paced city life myself.
As my parents moved to Nuremberg in Germany when I was a 3-years old kid every vacation we had to travel the winding coastal road along those dignified mountains on the way to visiting our relatives in Dalmatia. I remember well how often I felt sick on the backseat of my parents car driving the countless curves of Magistrala road, and how impressed I still was by the sight of the rocky karst formations of Velebit´s seaside slopes and the bare islands. Already at that time I had the idea of climbing an hiking Velebit some day. But still many years had to elapse till I went for my first trip in June 2004. My first mountaineering experience I had on Durmitor in Monte Negro in 1987. Then various hikes in the european Alps and the Canadian Rocky Mountains (Kanaskis, NPs around Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Waterton Lake) followed throughout the nineties.
For a long time I was enraptured by the Candian Rockies. For me they were the greatest natural beauty I´ve seen so far. And I still love the characteristic rock formations, the glaciers, the endless forests and not to forget the fauna of that region. But then I discovered the pictures of Aleksandar Gospic (SP-nick: Velebit) on the internet and can´t stop watching them again and again. They opened up all the beauty and particularity of the Velebit range to me. And what´s more they made me finally hike Velebit myself. I´m really proud that Croatia as a little country has to offer so much natural highlights that I´ve just begun to discover. And what´s better than sharing all this with likeminded people. That´s why I took AJ II with me. I wanted to show him the fascinating environment he lives next to not least in order to sharpen his awareness for the importance of envirnomental preservation.
This album not only shows pictures of southern Velebit but also of the Dalmatinska Zagora region near by Šibenik town. It´s the land where my ancestors come from and where AJ II still lives today.
