Alpendohlen on Sassongher

Alpendohlen on Sassongher

These neat relatives of the jackdaw are very common in the Dolomites as they prefer to nest on vertical rock. Whenever you sit down on a summit to eat they arrive to claim their share. Photo by my wife, Karen.

Re: Lovely...

Thank you for your kind comment. Yes, what would the mountains be without birds?

Nice little beggars

I hope their voices aren't too squeaky :)

Re: Nice little beggars

Not at all, they communicate with a sort of clear, not very loud whistle, but can also make some soft, prattling sounds, which I believe is communication within a couple (both sexes look alike).

Friends

I always see the Ravens. Is it the Sherpa that say that the Ravens are the people that have died, returning to the Mountains?

Re: Friends

Thank you, that is a very poetic saying. Actually these are not ravens, but a smaller relative, an Alpine jackdaw.
