Alpine Avens (Acomastylis rossii)

This yellow rose of the tundra is one of the more abundant wildflowers in the Rockies. They are easily confused with buttercups until late summer, when they turn deep red.

Look for the five, unruffled petals to identify.

This specimen was photographed near St. Mary's Glacier, east of James Peak. (July)
