What I've always found interesting about the mountains in Tasmania is that while they are very old, like the Appalachians, they are extremely rugged. I assume this is because they were all heavily glaciated.

And critters that can muck about with your packs? Or is it safe to leave your stuff at ground level?

I've never been farther away than St. Thomas. I'd love to visit Tasmania and do some hiking, but it's never been in the works.
