Baldy Bowl
Reaching the ridge at the top of the Baldy Bowl, 19 January 2008. Note that this is not the summit. From here, the summit is a hike of about 1/4 mile, with about 300 feet of elevation gain.

Near the top of the Bowl, climbers can choose one of many snow routes between rock outcroppings. The photo was taken from further north in the Bowl, at about the same elevation.

How were the snow conditions then? I wonder how much snow there is after the most recent storm. Thanks for posting.

At the time of this photo, there was no recent snow. In the morning, on the hike to the ski hut, the snow was very hard and icy, so we could not imagine why some people were carrying skis up the trail. But later, above the ski hut, on the southeast-facing Bowl, the sun had made good conditions with the snow, and some people were skiing just fine. For us, the conditions for the climb were pretty good. (The photo was taken at 11:33.) For the descent, in the early afternoon, the snow was getting too soft for glissading, but we managed to get some good runs.
