On the way to Mason Lake so we headed up and over Bandera and down the north side, around Island Lake to Mason and then down the freeway sized trail.

Good hike up until the bug fest once I started up the boot path off of the Ira Spring trail. Still nice views.

As full as the lot at Ira Spring TH was, I expected to see more folks on the trail, but I had a very pleasantly lonely hike. It was sunny in Seattle, but it started to sprinkle on me about an hour up. At least it waited to really pour until I was almost back at the car. This looks like it would be a fun snowshoe trip in the winter.

Beautiful sunny day. The steepness after the trail splits off surprised us, but was fun nonetheless. The views of the lakes and Defiance and tons of other mtns was absolutely great. Made it to the true summit where we didn't see anyone else, or even any footprints. Grazed on huckleberries between the false summit and the true summit.

The road is all cleaned up now and you can park at the TH again.

Justin PucciMason Lake Trail to Little Bandera  Sucess!

My wife and I finally got over to Bandera Mountain after about a year or so of it being on our list. We only went to the "false" summit or Little Bandera Mountain, as we wanted to relax and cook some food with great views. The "bootpath" to the true summit was faint at best. We'll head back up to tag the true summit eventually. The views along the way were some of the most spectacular that I've seen from an I-90 peak.

As with most mountains in this area, the views were amazing. The trail to the Mason Lake junction is ridiculously easy, it gets fun after that point.

As of today, the road to the TH is funky in five places, three of which are currently marked with construction sandwich board signs and tape. The final washout on the road is pretty good, but anyone with a four wheel drive and some clearance should have no issues getting to the TH.

I finally made it all the way to the true summit! A fun trip on a beautiful day when the weather predictions were clouds and rain. The snow slopes down from the ridge were the perfect angle and softness for excelent foot glissades.
