Hit this as part of a loop with Marcy and Saddleback. Spent the previous night at Slant Rock Leanto. Poured at night, but besides that, we had great summer weather. Great views.

Spent the night open air at about -20C under Slant Rock. Then a tough hike through knee-deep snow and over/under fallen trees to the summit. Increadible views and sunny skies, then off to Saddleback

The Ogreincomplete Great Range Traverse

The Ogre

Spring 2006, solo. 1am start from The Garden. Summited Marcy at 6:30, then proceeded to Haystack, Basin, Saddleback, Gothics, Armstrong, and Upper Wolf Jaw. Decided not to go to Lower Wolf Jaw, so it wasn't a full Great Range Traverse (which arguably might include Skylight as well).

I did this one in combination with Haystack and Saddleback, which gave me a nicely changing perspective of the Great Range as I went from peak to peak. Giant, Big Slide, Rocky Peak Ridge and Lake Placid are also visible under clear sky conditions. From Basin you get a magnificent view of Haystack, with Marcy and I think Slylight peeking out from behind. Can't see much to the southeast from Basin's summit. The approach from the west is somewhat arduous due to a long vertical ascent and shear rock faces near the top. Suggest you bring some glucose energy supplement and/or Gatorade as a pick-me-up.

Great winter climb and my 46th. Climbed with Mike F... we started early and made a day of it including Saddleback. Deep snow with a broken trail, the weather and views were great. Had a small bottle of champagne on top to celebrate my 46th. The scramble up Saddleback was a bit hairy... but worth the trip.

Was with hillman below during the lightning storm mentioned below. Been there several other times too. Basin is a special place for me.

#3 on our 4-peak day with wrong turms and not enough water. stellar on its own, but after Marcy and Haystack, all I could really say was meh.

Hiked with the brother and sister on this jaunt. Finally, good weather after a week of hiking in the rain and fog!

Parked at the Garden, and camped out next to the brook along the junction with the trail to Big Slide. Took the Johns Brook Trail, then the Shorey Shortcut to the Range Trail. The Shorey Shortcut is quite a bit of work for a "shortcut." Headed up the Range Trail to Basin, then onto SaddleBack and back down the Ore Bed.

Invented, or maybe discovered, a great new trail meal: warm chili inside a pita pocket. Delicious.

Climbed from Saddleback on our way to Haystack. Ended up in a giant cloud with about 10 feet of visibility. Had to coax our slightly hypotermic companion off the summit (he was really dusted that that point).

The section of trail between Saddleback and Basin is one of the roughest sections of trail in the Adirondacks. The great views are the reward for the effort needed for all this scrambling. It takes almost an hour to get from Saddleback to Basin unless you are in much better physical shape than I.

A rugged and steep ascent up this great mountain. One of the best views in the Park (for my money). A mostly bare summit and perfectly clear warm day made the views to nearby Marcy, Haystack, Saddleback and Gothics quite a sight.

We were alone on the summit for about 45 minutes. Also traversed Saddleback and Gothics the same day. A nice, but tough, hike over some of the steeper trails in the High Peaks. A must see for any true Adirondack Hiker. A much more remote and isolated hike then some of the more popular mountains, which makes it all the more attractive.
