Battle Ax  Sucess!

Did this one again after a long day of hiking from Mother Lode Creek, where I spent the previous night. The spring on the ridge north of the peak was a welcome surprise since I was out of water and really didn't want to wait to get to Elk Lake to have a drink. The view stretched from Rainier to Diamond Peak. Great sunset. Hiked down to Elk Lake to camp for the night.

Outstanding Views!  Sucess!

While spending time around Elk Lake and the surrounding areas, it is always a way to find my direction when I spot Battle Ax from other neighboring peaks. It seems to rise above and always stands out. Spending the night up there was amazing and definitely looking forward to doing that again soon!

Route Climbed: Battle Ax Trail Date Climbed: Summer 1976  Sucess!

My wife was about 5 months pregnant with our first child when we took some kids from McMinnville, Oregon up to Battle Ax. (She is just left of Mt. Jefferson in the photo below). You might think that if she could hike this peak while pregnant, she must be an avid hiker. I can only dream it is so. Note that in the photo I was able to get Mt. Jefferson in focus. I have no idea what camera was used since I didn't get mine until after the baby was born.

Route Climbed: #544 Thru Battle Ax's Back Door Date Climbed: July 30th 2005  Sucess!

I lounged on the shore of Elk Lake most of Saturday. Planning on spending the night at the summit I packed up and left camp at about 4:30PM. Must have been 90 deg. when I left.... The running springs along the Bagby trail #544 were a welcome site although a bit messy on the boots. The afternoon sun was on the other side of Battle Ax so it was suprisingly pleasant on the East Side but once I switched back and caught the northern ridge it was full on late afternoon sun exposure. I was glad I lugged up enough water. And at the time, not so glad I lugged up the camera gear, and telescope. Sheeesh, what was I thinking...

The sunset was awesome...the night was cool and clear...the AM moon was beautiful through the telescope...and the sunrise was incredible. Now I know what I was thinking. It was worth the added weight.

A great place to witness the late afternoon and early morning peak shadows.

Wear your seat belt and be sure to hold off on lunch until you've summitted. The road in will jerk you around as if you were taking a ride on a ski biscuit in Detroit Lake. The old growth forest is beautiful. Mt. Jefferson was covered in clouds all day. Cornvallis and I could see from Hood to the Sisters. I'll bet the view is incredible on a sunny, clear day.

Every time I go into the Bull of the Woods I am surprised how beautiful the area is. Great place to see the rare PNW old growth forest. Summit ridge very nice, great views. Decided to hike up Mt. Beachie after a nice lunch on Battle Ax. Yes, the road is that bad, one of the worst I have been on.

Route Climbed: Both routes Date Climbed: Every August  Sucess!

I summit this peak every summer at least once. Every August I'll live on the shore of Elk Lake for twelve days. It's a tradition that's gone on for the past ten years. It's a great base camp for the surrounding area.

Route Climbed: Battle ax creek -- Whetstone mountain trail #546 loop. Date Climbed: October 21, 2003  Sucess!

made a whole day out of this by starting at the trailhead for Whetstone trail #546 and following it to where trail #3369 branches off to the right and headed down into the valley. I crossed Battle ax Creek on some slippery rocks, and then followed the partly overgrown battle ax creek trail along what a long time ago was a road. after 4.1 miles i came to beechie saddle. and took a left onto the battle ax mountain trail, and followed it 2 miles past some bright fall colors to the old lookout site on the summit. I had awesome views from Rainier to South Sister, and could even make out Diamond Peak in the distance. Then i headed down the other side of the mountain where I saw and spooked the first Black bear I have seen In Oregon, and followed Bagby trail #544 back to the junction with trail #546, and back to my truck.

Route Climbed: Battle Ax Trail/Bagby Hot Springs Trail loop Date Climbed: June 9, 2001  Sucess!

Cloudy weather made for a cool day of hiking. There were a few snow patches off the trail, but the trail itself was snow-free. Pikas and frogs made noise around the rock gardens.

Route Climbed: Battle Ax Trail/Bagby Hot Springs Trail #544 loop Date Climbed: Multiple  Sucess!

10/6/02 - Short easy hike up. Lots of fall color and probably the last hot weather of the season. Great views from Rainier to Diamond Peak. Could also see out to Marys Peak in the Coast Range across a sea of clouds hanging low in the Willamette River Valley. Neat ponds on the return loop. Nasty nasty road in to the trailhead.

5/15/05 - Did this one after Beachie and an unnamed point on the ridge south of Beachie. Rainy day, views were in and out. Went down the same trail as came up.

6/9/13 - With Karl, Emma and Luna after doing scrambly ridge on Beachie. Beautiful day. Will Karl ever get the Beachie page back up?
