This peak took me 4 attempts. I tried once from Sawmill Trail, twice via Bell's Canyon (avalanches have wiped away the upper part of the trail and make it a legitimate ordeal), and finally got there via the Schoolhouse Springs trail group. Camped for the night and climbed the peak first thing in the morning along with some others. Beautiful little lake and great sleeping on a melted out patch of soft pine needles with snow all around. My first ever mountain trip without a tent, and since, I have only taken a tent once. A great peak, but more impressive to behold from the Western ridge. Climbed the east(ish) ridge which shares a sort of saddle with the Thunders.

Nice fall hike, with reds & yellows in the lower elevations & still a bit of snow between the boulders at the top from the storm a couple of weeks ago. Contemplated heading over to Lone, but bagged the idea after seeing conditions on the ridge.

Have climbed this about a half-dozen times - usually en-route to Lake Hardy. Took a group of 14 yr-old scouts this time. Gorgeous views of the Utah / Salt Lake valleys, Lone Peak, Timp, Box Elder, etc.

I hiked up through the Hamongogs with a group of hikers heading to Lake Hardy, as part of the annual Alpine Days tradition. When we got to the meadow where you drop off Bighorn's south ridge, I decided to break away from the group and hike to Bighorn Peak. I had never been there and wanted to see the views. It was a great hike and the views were worth the extra effort. I returned via Dry Creek Canyon.

I've climbed this one 12 times.
12/10/09 From Alpine. -1 at the start.
12/03/09 From Alpine with Moogie737 and Christine
11/27/09 From Alpine with Scott Wesemann and Matthew Van Horn. Great late fall hike.
12/6/08 Started out from Alpine headed for S Thunder but didn't bring snowshoes and thought it would be stupid to persist, so I settled for Upper Bells.
08/14/07 With lesdubois. From Alpine after doing S Thunder. Finally figured out the easy way to do the east ridge.
12/01/02 Started from Alpine headed for S Thunder but the weather wasn't looking too good so settled for Upper Bells.
08/31/02 From Alpine. Did this one first and then went over to Lone Peak.
07/27/02 From Alpine after doing S Thunder. From the final saddle to the summit I stayed on the S side of the ridge the whole way. I'm never doing it that way again.
05/12/01 With MM from Alpine. Snow was soft but we did fine without snowshoes.
10/07/00 With MM from Alpine. Then went over to Lone Peak.
11/13/99 With MM from Alpine. Then went over to Lone Peak. Awkward amount of snow on N side of ridge.
06/28/98 My first WMC trip and my first experience with Alpine. Led by Brad Yates with lesdubois and Todd. We did a loop, going up the trail east of the Upper Bells ridge and coming down the trail west of the ridge. Even though it was the end of June and a southern exposure, there was still a ton of snow.

With Matthew Van Horn and ZeeJay. Came up from Alpine on Black Friday. The weather was perfect until the last few hundred feet, then it got really windy, and it was very cold on top, so we didn't stay long. You can see a video from our summit experience here:

Great climb from Bell's, found a overgrown trail in upper Bell's that climbs a minor ridge up to the pond SW of the reservoir and then continues high above the reservoir to the saddle. Still spring un upper Bells, lots of flowers Very efficient, made it up in less than 4 hours then continued to Lone and down to Corner canyon. Love the gendarmes on the west ridge, fun routefinding.

Date Climbed: Jun 14, 2008
First ascent was from Schoolhouse Springs on 6/14/08 with vanman798 after climbing S Thunder. We gained the south slopes by climbing up a notch from the bowl to the east, and walked to the summit on snow. Had a good glissade down.
Second ascent was with my friend Duane on 6/29/08 via the fun east ridge, as a consolation peak. Plan A was North Thunder, but for variety's sake (since I had just been on the Schoolhouse Springs trail 2 weeks before) we started at the Dry Creek TH and wore ourselves out trying to go fast enough to make up for the extra distance on that inefficient route.
This is a great peak, and very underrated. It'd be considered a classic if there weren't higher ones nearby.

Sean Peckham and I climbed this one via the Lake Hardy/School House Springs route from Alpine. We were in the neighborhood, having climbed South Thunder, so we thought why not! We covered over 13 miles, and over 6400 ft of vertical. Check out our summit video.

This was the third peak in the Hematoma Quad series with Asher and Grizz. The ridge down to the saddle before Lone Peak is a little confusing and I was glad to have Grizz leading the way through the complex network of granite.

Ok, Ok, so it's technically spring. It sure felt like winter on Bighorn today. I just HAD to try out my new technical daypack so I climbed Bighorn from Alpine via the upper Schoolhouse Springs service road out of the First Hamengog. I needed both my snowshoes and my ax. Wonderful day!

|Moogie737||Route Climbed: East Ridge via Bells Canyon |
Date Climbed: Aug 19, 2005
Counting time spent route finding and bushwhacking I reached the summit in 5 hours. Wild flowers still plentiful. Came down the northeast side of the ridge from the summit and found it exhilarating. One could take that route up from the end of the canyon instead of hiking all the way to the saddle. Took 3+45 down and only found the actual trail 2 hours into the descent. Strangely enough, I didn't even see the Upper Reservoir going up or coming down! July 25, 2008. Smarter now; I take people with me who know the trail. Brent, Dave & I bagged Upper Bells along with Lone Peak, the summit ascent for Lone Peak beginning up a chute 1/2 mile southwest of the Upper Bells reservoir. Exciting little diversion, I must say. 12-3-09 With Christine & ZeeJay from the Alpine (Hamongogs) side. Very little snow but great trip. #4 Can't remember exactly how that one worked out, but it did. :) #5 10-16-10 W/ Dave from Lone Peak. #6 Dec. 2011 from Alpine TH. Sketchy snow.
