highlandvillagerHiking, storms, and turkey hunting  Sucess!
Date Climbed: May 20, 2008

I hiked with my dad along the Jack's Knob trail from Jack's Gap, meeting my wife, mother, and son at the parking lot. I carried my son the rest of the way to the summit in a backpack, with my wife and mother following. High winds and an approaching storm cut our time short on the summit, but the views were amazing. On the drive back, a turkey trying to "fly" across the road met its end against our bumper, making quite an impact. We were fortunate to leave the mountain when we did, as severe thunderstorms and tornados rolled through north Georgia the rest of the evening. HP9

Climbed this bugger in early July 2000. This summit topped off a hard 4-day section of AT hiking-Dick's Creek Gap to Fontana Dam.

Date Climbed: Apr 12, 2008

Climbed from Jack's Gap via the Jack's Knob Trail. Saw no one on the trail until I got to the parking lot. The views from the top were quite astounding. I am not sure why they didn't take the AT over this mountain.

TBFredericksAlone at the top of Georgia  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 13, 2008

Got there about 9:00am. Absolutely deserted. Worked out well because I didn't have the $3 cash to pay for parking. But also means I had to deal with just taking the half-mile trail. Disappointing hike, but nice to be alone up there. After getting back down, took Jack's Knob to South (true) Summit of Wolfpen Ridge.

Summited numerous times via Arkaquah and Jacks Knob Trail. Rime ice formations provide great photo opportunities in the winter. There's a 5k running race on the paved access road every winter. Gains 2500 ft in 3.1 miles -- ouch!

The edge

Start of the second hat trick of the current loop...
We wanted to get there for the 4th HP in the same day but it got too dark and decided to wait till the next day...
The view wasn't there much... pretty foggy!!;
Asked to get the summit marker unlocked

NavySeabeeRoute Climbed: Parking Lot Trail  Sucess!
Date Climbed: Mar 10, 2007

Left Asheville at 6:45 and was standing on the summit by 9:10. Took the easy path as I didn't have time to do the Jack's Knob trail. Bit blustery and clouds obscured some of the view, but had the top of Georgia to myself. Nobody there to collect my $3 either. Scrambled to the top of Wolfpen Ridge HP (P4561) for grins. Of course by the time I was speeding back through Hiawassee the clouds were clearing nicely and I could see the summit. Oh well, off to Mount Mitchell...number 9 in the book of HPs.

Took the short hike up from the big parking area .6 miles. On my way back to VA. Being the 1st of January, not too crowded luckily. Great views, and although a developed summit, it's done nicely at least. Nice weather, chilly, but warm for this time of year all over the country. Saw a sign for a 4.5 mile AT route...I want to check that out sometime. Highpoint #8.

The weather was perfect for a climb to the top. Not too humid at all. Met some of the people who maintain the trail (the name of their organization escapes me at the moment) and enjoyed talking to them.
