Brick Cap

There are 17 species of Hypholoma (Maslanka) mushrooms in Polish mountain forests. They all look alike and one needs to be careful while picking them as some are poisonous. This is Hypholoma sublateritium (Maslanka ceglasta) sometimes called Brick Cap in English. This mushroom is slightly poisonous and it should not be consumed. It can be recognized by brick-red color of the middle of its cap. It grows in autumn and forms clusters on hardwood logs and stumps. The Low Beskid -Forest near Black Creek- September 29, 2007.
