Re: Neat!

Love the ice tools!!!! Wish I had incredible friends like yours. I am hoping that we can get our little boy out on slopes and walls as soon as he is able too. You should do a blog on the adventures of baby adze once she is here :)

I admire you for skiing this late in pregnancy. I am 25 weeks and the mistake of stopping the weekend escapades really did hurt my fitness. Unfortunately, I get backaches and pains around stomach if I push myself outdoors so it is very simple hikes for me for now :(

Re: Neat!

Great idea on the Baby Adze blog! Maybe you and others will contribute as well?

I'm sorry to hear of the pain you're experiencing. I had to stop running because of lower abdomen and groin pain. I also experienced some considerable discomfort when hiking downhill. This has gone away now though, as my body has adjusted. I've found that if I don't exercise for a few days, my back will start aching. Have you tried a prenatal yoga, modified crunches, and/or a belly band? These may help with the backaches. Swimming and the elliptical were also suggested to me as they are very low impact activities.

In any case, go easy on yourself; heed your body. It's great that you are still hiking!!! Keep it up!

great page

Amy, you organized it so well... I hope that you will have an easy labor.
Pregnancy is not an illness, it is a physiological state, so you should be able to do whatever your body allows you... yes, there are some days that you feel exhausted, but that is all normal... Good luck!!!!

Hi Liba! Great to hear from you. I totally agree that pregnancy is not an illness or disability. Thanks for the comment and well wishes!

thank you!

This is long after the fact of you writing this, but I just discovered your post while searching for high altitude and pregnancy. I just found out that I'm pregnant (completely unplanned & unexpected), and was looking forward to a summer full of trail races, 14ers, and Rainier. It's hard to find anything other than generic guidelines that seem to only apply to women who have never exercised in their lives and live at sea level. I so appreciate you taking the time to chronicle your pregnancy adventures in such a detailed fashion. You are inspiring! I can't say that I'll have the same success, but I'm not afraid to try now.

I hope you're enjoying being a mom. I'm sure you won't have trouble finding the energy to keep up. Your daughter is going to be ridiculous some day. I'll watch for her in future olympics.

Re: thank you!

Thank you so much for your comment dutchbadger and good luck on staying active throughout your pregnancy. Staying active minimized my morning sickness, backaches, weight gain and other ailments typically associated with pregnancy. In addition, I had a relatively easy delivery, a very speedy recovery, and a healthy, lean, active baby. Enjoy your summer, just remember to stay very well hydrated as dehydration could lead to miscarriage. Good luck in your races! There are also accounts of women athletes who ran/competed/played basketball while pregnant. Keep me posted! I'd love to hear about your experiences at altitude.

Re: Thanks so much for this article!

Thanks for the feedback LDuszer. I'm glad you found this article useful. Our daughter Esme was due on Dec 25 as well, but came 13 days early! I believe that maintaining my level of fitness throughout pregnancy helped to mitigate all the usual ailments: morning sickness, backache, etc. as well as prepared us both for the physical challenges of birth. Just remember to listen to what your body is telling you and to stay very well hydrated! I would love an update on your personal experiences if you want to share! Good luck and happy hiking!

Great Motivation

Thank you for sharing! I just went to my first prenatal visit, and had similar questions. As an outdoor guide, I just started my training for mountaineering season, and have enjoyed our winter here in the Pacific Northwest doing some back country snowboarding. It has been great to read your posts, re-inspiring me that my goal don't have to be sidelined because of baby. Baby will have summits before he/she is walking!

inspiring, thank you

thank you so much for this. you've completely changed my outlook. i have a "surprise" pregnancy and have been depressed for the past week thinking that i won't be able to ski or climb or do anything fun for the next nine months. i feel one million times better + more optimistic after reading your chronicles.
