I'm not sure why I bring it along. I go through phases. It is also a bonus measure of protection, more then my Leki poles can provide. Once when I was like 18 I saw a guy climbing Baldy in August with one, thought it was cool but still faithful to your old axe regardless of weather. Like taking your favorite dog for a walk.

I watched a friend self-arrest on a long steep dirt slope during a pleasure bushwhack on the slopes of Mt. Hood! His climb back up brought new meaning to 'grovelling'
