Commelina Communis

Commelina Communis

Asiatic dayflower (Commelina Communis) is neither common or native flower to Gorski Kotar. This herbaceous plant of the Dayflower family, has been introduced to Europe rather recently, and moved to GK probably from the Pannonian basin areas of Croatia, where it is more common. Now it can be seen around dirt trails, easy to spot while mountainbiking even on the cloudy day(see above pic), because of its bright blue petals. Spreading so fast that is often considered a weed, little Asiatic dayflower is actually considered aggresive plant. Why Dayflower? Since in summer weather flowers open in the early morning and disintegrate into a jelly sort of mass by noon of the same day, so bees and other pollinators must work really quickly Plant was named in honour to Dutch 16/17th century bothanists of Commelijn family. Blue petals represent Jan Commelijn and his nephew Kaspar, whilst smaller low white petal symbolises their brother who died young.
