Seen from the northeast, from the shores of Lago di Morasco (1815m). There are lots of lakes in this area, some natural but mostly man made, providing hydroelectric power. According to my map there is a good hiking trail over the pass, leading to Rifugio Margoli, next to Lago Vannino (2177m). I estimate it would take three hours from here, assuming that the snow high up on the trail wouldn't prove too cumbersome. But that's not where I'm going; I've got my eyes set on a couple of 3000-ers over the next few days. Not today though. It's already a bit late, so I'll just hike up to the highest lake around, Lago del Sabbione (2465m). According to my map there are no less than 4 refuges at or close to that lake, and I've been told that at least one of them should be open. In my experience, with refuges in Italy you never know for sure that it's open until you see it with your own eyes or heard it from the hut warden on the phone. Still, with 4 chances, I'm optimistic. And if all are closed, well, then I'll have to improvise or walk back down. 25 June 2013.
