Good job on the trail description and photos. We plan to be out in the San Juans this September and top of our list is Cross Mountain. We hiked as far as Lizard Head in August 2012 and ever since have wanted to go just that little bit further. Cross Mtn. sounds very doable for two people in their early 60s from Minnesota! We hiked to the summit of Blue Lakes Pass last year and did Mt Elbert in 2010, so we have a little bit of experience. How scary IS the ridge exactly? :)
the ridge is not scary at all - as photos shows, nice and easy hiking, wide enough that it feels very comfortable.
My son got little spooked on reaching the ridge - you have to negotiate some steeper loose scree - worth the effort, amazing views from the summit.
