Overview Sleme W, from Veliki podi
"Crossing Sleme" is a summer mountain hiking path which is marked and secured. It is considered as "very demanding" in terms of summer mountain hiking (planinarenje in Slovenian), which simply means the upper of three grades used for to describe the technical aspect (planinska pot/mountain-hiking path; zahtevna planinska pot/demanding mountain-hiking path; zelo zahtevna planinska pot/ very demanding mountain-hiking path).
This route crosses below the W part of the range's main ridge, on the S side. It traverses from one ground (high terrace) to another and reaches no summit. The high terrace to the W is Veliki Podi (big grounds) and the one to the E is Mali Podi (small grounds). It is the Skuta SE ridge that separates Mali and Veliki podi. This ridge has many names describing various parts of it. Sleme is the name of the central notch, a short horizontal section. Our route takes advantage of this weak spot for to cross over. The west side of Sleme is the crux of our route, and the reason for being "very demanding" (see above).
A part from being a beautiful path offering views of the walls to the N and of the entire Kamniška Bistrica valley to the S, it serves of course as a link between mountain huts, linking the Kamnik hut or the Okrešelj hut to the Cojzova hut or the Češka hut.
> carefully follow the blazes, especially by foggy weather > both Podi are karstic grounds, which means there are a lot of holes!
Both high terraces have a bivouac hut: Bivak Pavleta Kemperla, and the Mali Podi bivouac hut.
Getting ThereTo the East, reach the upper end of the Turski Žleb couloir (Mali Podi):
- from the Okrešelj hut along the Turski Žleb route.
- from the Kamnik hut, Crossing Turska gora.
To the W, reach Veliki Podi (Bivouac Pavleta Kemperla):
- from the Cojzova hut along the Skuta standard.
- from the Češka hut to Mlinarsko saddle, continuing along the Mlinarsko saddle S path.
From the bivouac hut follow (eastward) the inscriptions for Kamniško sedlo or Okrešelj.
Route Description> E - W description
Start at the upper end of Turski Žleb, the couloir between Turska gora and Mala Rinka. Follow the inscriptions for Cojzova koča or/and Kokrško sedlo, the Skuta SE ascent soon splitting right hand.
Having crossed the Mali Podi grounds, the path snakes up the overgrown scree slope on the east side of the Skuta ridge, reaching Sleme - the notch. The descent to Veliki Podi is the crux. A few metal wires and pegs (recently renewed) take us to the right (along the base of Skuta's S wall) before dropping to Veliki Podi.
Along the Veliki Podi grounds continue following the blazes westward, till reaching the bivouac hut.
