Crux of Wash Route

Crux of Wash Route

Some who report the standard DPS route (the "Wash Route") up Corkscrew Peak as being harder than Class 2 might do so because they climbed one or more of the dryfalls instead of finding a bypass. This 12' dryfall goes at Class 4 and is the crux of the route. However, there is a bypass, steep and loose, on the right, but you have to backtrack to just outside where the wash narrows to reach this dryfall. Death Valley National Park, CA-- April 2014

Re: Great Route Photo

I hope it helps! If you haven't gone there yet, I definitely recommend going up via the canyon and down via the ridge. Nice variety.

Also, if you have time, consider Little Corkscrew. It's the unnamed peak on the ridge directly south of the main summit. I haven't done it, but I hear it's a fun scramble and has its own register.

Re: Great Route Photo

I climbed this exact dry fall today. It's not as hard as it looks. We spent 6 days bagging peaks, canyons, and dunes. One of the best trips I've been on in years. I might make a trip report, if I can ever find the time.
