Re: Why do you need a rope?Actually, there is one piece about 30 ft up. The pitch is steep, but only 5.4. David has led 5.12 trad in the past (and did many FA's in the desert southwest). Now he's married and has a daughter, but is still confident leading 5.11a. He doesn't mind running it out a bit on easier pitches. I definitely would have placed more gear if I were leading the pitch.
